Protests against Israel’s Gaza blockade

world news

| |

Hundreds of people have marched through Cairo in protest against Israel’s blockade of Gaza.

This has been the largest of a series of demonstrations by mostly foreign activists to mark the first anniversary of Israel’s offensive on the Hamas-ruled coastal territory.

Protesters, including Israeli activists, also took to the streets around the Erez border crossing, the principal passage point between Israel and the Gaza Strip.

The Gaza Strip has been under a crippling blockade since 2006 when Hamas was democratically elected.

Last year’s offensive left more than 1400 Palestinians dead, including more than 900 civilians, according to Palestinian officials.
