There are reports clashes between anti-government protesters and security forces have continued into the night in Iran.

Earlier, in the worst outbreak of unrest since June’s disputed presidential poll authorities confirmed 15 people had been killed in Tehran on Sunday. Dozens of Police have also been injured.

However, opposition websites claim at least eight protesters died in the capital and across Iran after tens of thousands took to the streets during the religious festival of Ashura.

Opposition sources say a nephew of defeated presidential candidate Mirhossein Mousavi was among those killed. They claim he died in hospital after being shot in the chest.

Information remains hazy because of restrictions on foreign media. Iran’s elite have denied opening fire on the pro-reform demonstrators and state TV blamed ‘‘unknown assailants’‘ for the killings, confirming more than 300 protesters had been arrested in Tehran on Sunday.

Earlier, in a further sign of the split between reformers and hardliners, pro-government militia stormed the hall where ex-reformist president Mohammad Khhatami was giving a speech.

Khatami, a solid Mousavi supporter, was forced to make a quick exit.
