Romania: bleak anniversary of execution

A cemetery in the Romanian capital Bucharest saw a cluster of around 15 people gather at the grave of former dictator Nicolae Ceausescu, as one of them said, “for a little propaganda”.

A self-declared member of the Romanian Workers’ Party proclaimed: “We are here to commemorate 20 years since Nicolae and Elena Ceausescu were shot.”

An anti-communist revolt in Romania led to the ruler’s execution on Christmas day in 1989. Ceausescu’s police had tried to force a parish priest from his home in Timisoara to a remote rural posting, massive crowds gathered to resist and events degenerated.
