The Vatican insisted the Pope’s schedule would not be changed as a result of the security incident.
He appeared in front of the crowds in St Peter’s Square at midday to deliver his traditional Urbi and Orbi message and blessing.
“Again today, for people profoundly affected by a serious financial crisis, and a moral one, and in the painful circumstances of war and conflict, the church speaks like a shepherd: let’s go to Bethlehem where we can find our hope.”
