Passengers onboard a plane that crashed in Jamaica are counting their blessings that no one was killed. The American Airlines Boeing 737 overshot the runway as it landed at Kingston’s international airport, breaking up into several pieces. It is believed that torrential rain could have been a factor in the accident.

The plane took off from Washington DC and stopped off in Miami, before continuing on to Kingston.

One passenger said: “We just saw a big flash of light and we felt the big impact and we realised that the plane had crashed. We scrambled out. We didn’t know if it was going to explode, so we tried to get out as quickly as possible with the help of the attendants and other passengers, and we helped little kids and some older people who were not able to.”

Of the 148 passengers and six crew, the Jamaican Information Ministry say that 91 were injured. Most of them have minor fractures and bruises, and some were in shock. However, many were treated quickly and have now left hospital.
