The Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi is recovering from a broken nose and smashed teeth after an attack at a political rally in Milan. Television footage caught the moment he was hit in the face with an object by someone in the crowd.

The premier was bundled into a car by aides and rushed away minutes after addressing thousands of supporters. The 73-year-old was obviously shocked and was kept in hospital overnight.

He’s said to have been hit by a small model of Milan cathedral, thrown at close range. A 42-year-old man has been arrested and charged with aggravated assault. Massimo Tartaglia is reported to have been receiving treatment for mental problems at a clinic for several years.
