There have been more violent scenes between climate campaigners and police in Copenhagen.

The delegates at the UN sponsored climate change conference were taking a day off. But there was no day of rest at Copenhagen’s port, where demonstrators tried to block traffic in and out. Earlier, environment ministers had begun arriving in the Danish capital for informal talks aimed at overcoming the rifts between rich and poor nations on cutting greenhouse gas emissions. At Copenhagen Cathedral they made their views on climate change clear in a different way. The Danish royal family and the Archbishop of Canterbury attended a service, followed by the ringing of the bells for the climate – a gesture echoed in churches worldwide. The South African Nobel prize winner Archbishop Desmond Tutu handed a petition to the UN’s top man on climate change Yvo de Boer.
