Long-awaited CGI epic “Avatar” – which has just premiered in London – is being hailed as a new milestone in cinematic history.

The computer generated 3-D spectacular has wowed audiences and critics alike. At a cost of 400 million dollars – or 272 million euros, to make and market – Avatar tells the story of a distant planet which a colonial mining operation is intent on exploiting. Described in reviews as “awe inspiring” and “jaw-dropping, director James Cameron is said to have made the most dazzling film of the decade. “You know somehow I don’t ever process that this is going to happen,” he said. “I mean there is a part of me that thinks that I’m not going to live long enough to get the movie done. It’s such an arduous process. I never quite visualise myself standing here, but of course it does roll around.” Avatar is set to become the latest in a long list of box office successes for Cameron.
