Greece rocked by second day of violent unrest

Running battles between anarchists and police have rocked Athens for a second day.

Violence in the Greek capital reportedly broke out when hooded gangs broke away from a main rally, smashing shops and bus shelters, and setting bins alight. The response by authorities was tough. Using tear gas, riot squads chased protesters through the streets who countered in a similarly robust manner. The latest clashes follow a weekend of unrest that saw some 270 arrests. Today’s disturbances came after some 3000 protesters took to the streets to continue commemorations marking the one year anniversary of the police killing of a teenager. Greece’s new Socialist government remains determined to avert a repeat of last year’s violent demonstrations. It has deployed some 6000 police.
