Thousands of people have lined the streets of Santiago for the reburial service of popular Chilean folk singer, Victor Jara.

He was among more than 3,000 people who were killed or disappeared during Augusto Pinochet’s military regime. Jara’s songs made him a national icon and an international symbol of resistance against repression. His daughter, Manuela, told the crowd the ceremony was in stark contrast to his 1973 burial which was attended by only his British widow, Joan Turner, and two other people. His body was only exhumed in July to confirm the cause of death and uncover evidence to prosecute those responsible. The investigation revealed he was tortured and shot 44 times after being rounded up with other political prisoners just after the coup. President Michelle Bachelet pointed out that Chile must continue to seek truth and justice because so that many other families would be able to rest in peace like Victor’s.More about: ,
