Hopes of a breakthrough in a deadlock between Spain and Morocco over the fate of a prominent Western Sahara independence campaigner have been dashed once again.

It had been reported that Aminatou Haidar had ended a hunger strike in a Spanish airport, more than two weeks after being refused re-entry to Western Sahara after a visit to the US. She was supposed to fly out from Lanzarote airport in the Canary Islands on Friday, back to her native homeland, but she appears to have been blocked once again. Haidar said: “I’m defending my dignity, because my dignity is the most important thing. As a mother, I’m always thinking of my sons, but I prefer they live without their mother, if they have dignity.” Haidar’s supporters say her passport was confiscated by Moroccan authorities after she refused to give Morocco as her nationality. Morocco annexed Western Sahara in 1975 and rejects demands by the Polisario Front for a referendum on full independence.More about: Morocco, Spain
