Europe tackles nuclear safety issues

Nuclear energy accounts for more than 30 percent of the total energy production in the European Union. While there are major concerns regarding safety and disposal of the toxic waste, in its favour it does not produce carbon dioxide, one of the most potent greenhouse gases. To try to tackle the safety issue, the European Commission Joint Research Centre in Petten, Holland, is working on several fronts. It collects and collates information on operating procedures and problems on a European level.
