Gunmen murder 21 in the Philippines

Unknown gunmen have murdered at least 21 people in the southern Philippines, in an apparent attempt to disrupt nominations for upcoming provincial elections. A woman trying to register her husband, two lawyers and several local journalists were among 30 hostages kidnapped on the southern island of Mindanao.

The army says the bodies of 13 women and eight men have now been recovered. All of them had been mutilated; several had been beheaded. Local clan rivalries are believed to be behind the killings.More about: ,
