An inquiry is underway into the latest sinking of an Indonesian ferry, in which at least 29 people died. 245 others though survived the disaster, which happened in bad weather. It is reported that there were 291 people on board the Dumai Express 10, despite her being rated to carry only 273. She was sailing between Batam, near Singapore, to Dumai on Riau island when she ran into bad weather and sank. Rescuers are looking for 17 people still missing. But high winds and six-metre waves are hampering the operation.

Indonesia relies heavily on ferry services to link the many islands in the sprawling archipelago. But accidents are common and many ships head to sea overcrowded. Survivors said at least 50 people were seen boarding the Dumai Express without tickets.More about: ,
