Demos on Ukraine’s independence day On Sunday, Ukrainians marked the fifth anniversary of the Orange Revolution, a popular protest that led to the annulment of the 2004 presidential election result.
As the opposition candidate in the disputed poll, President Viktor Yushchenko was swept to power following the uprising. Once closely allied with Prime Minister, Julia Timoschenko, they are now bitter rivals and will face each other in January’s presidential polls. Perhaps more surprisingly, the man ousted from power after the Orange Revolution is now the favourite to take the top spot after the elections in two months time. Pro-Kremlin Viktor Ianoukovitch is showing support of over 23 per cent, while the current President is far behind with less than five per cent.More about: Anniversary, UkraineCopyright © 2012 euronews
