Italian prosecutors have called for a life sentence for American student Amanda Knox and her former boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito, accused of the murder of fellow student Meredith Kercher.

A third man Randy Guede has already been convicted over the killing. In his final arguments Giuliano Mignini painted a picture in which a sex game and long-running hatred led to murder. Meredith Kercher’s throat was slit and she died an agonising death in a pool of her own blood in November 2007. The prosecution claim the pair then faked a burglary to cover their tracks. Both Knox and the Italian Sollecito deny the charge. They will present their final defence statements next month. Meredith Kercher from London was a university exchange student living in Perugia where she shared a flat with Knox. She was 21 at the time of her death.More about: Italy
