Iceland and the EU – a lasting affair?

Iceland has always been fiercely independent but after the collapse of their banks, and in the face of a global recession, Iceland applied for EU membership. Fisheries however, could be a major stumbling block. They represent 40% of the country’s industry and Icelandic fishermen are unlikely to relinquish control of their industry without a fight. On the streets however, opinion is split. Many people are in favour of EU membership. The question will eventually be settled by a referendum.
