Floods hit north west England: 11 people missing

RAF helicopters have been involved in overnight rescue operations after torrential rain lashed towns in the north west of England.

As many as 200 people have been evacuated in the town of Cockermouth in Cumbria, as water levels hit the 2.5 metre mark. The RAF joined coastguards and other emergency services in rescue efforts as fast flowing water rampaged through the town centre. Bridges have collapsed and a police officer is one of 11 people reported missing across the county. Conditions in the town are described as “atrocious”, however water levels are now beginning to fall. Torrential rain has also hit northwest Wales and western Scotland and 25 flood warnings are in place. To add to concerns more heavy rainfall is expected within the next 24 hours.
