Van Rompuy one step closer to presidency

Former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair is out of the race for EU presidency.

Belgium Prime Minister Herman Van Rompuy is now expected to scoop the job, with Catharine Ashton a favourite for foreign minister. France and Germany’s support for the Belgium is thought to have contributed to his chances of becoming the EU’s first ever full time president. Both positions were created under the Lisbon Treaty, which will come into force on the 1st of December 2009.More about: , ,
