Russian court says no to capital punishment

Russia’s moratorium on the death penalty has been extended.

The country’s constitutional court decided just a few weeks before it was due to expire. Capital punishment is still part of Russia’s criminal code, but it has not been enforced since 1996. However, the suspension of the death penalty is not supported by everyone. Around two thirds of Russians agree with it and some criminals even request it, in reaction to the desperate conditions inside prison. The only European country where the death penalty is still used is Belarus.More about: ,
