Violence erupted on the streets of central Athens on Tuesday night with up to 13 policemen reportedly injured, one seriously.

Hundreds of youths threw stones at police, set fire to garbage cans and destroyed cars in the centre of the city. Police fired teargas to disperse the rioters. One person was arrested and more than 200 others detained. The violence flared after thousands had marched through the Greek capital to mark the uprising at the Athens Polytechnic University in November 1973. It was crushed by the military junta then ruling Greece. Dozens were believed to have been killed when tanks rolled through the schools gates and in the surrounding streets. Earlier demonstrators chanted anti war slogans. Led by the Polytecnic’s blood stained flag they headed for the US Embassy as they accuse the United States of supporting the military junta.More about: Clashes and riots, Greece
