Pressure is mounting on Europe’s leaders to do more to get women into the EU – one day before two of the bloc’s top jobs are decided.

Earlier, several female MEPs gathered with protesters outside the European Council in Brussels calling for an end to the male stranglehold on the bloc’s institutions. They want one of the recently created senior posts of president or foreign affairs chief to go to a woman. Even though, several women are widely thought to be on the list of candidates for the two top posts, none is thought to be a front runner. The protesters also said they would not accept a Commission that is less than 35 per cent female.
