The EU and Russia will seek to rebuild economic and political ties today at a summit in Stockholm.

Relations have been strained by Moscow’s war with Georgia last year and differences over trade, energy, human rights and climate change. Hopes of renewing the partnership have been boosted by a deal this week on an “early warning” mechanism to shield Europe from energy cuts. The EU fears gas supplies from Russia are again under threat by a dispute between Moscow and Ukraine as Kiev prepares to hold a presidential election. Both sides, however, have been talking openly about their mutual dependence, but officials say there is little chance of any agreement being signed today. Russian gas supplies to Europe via Ukraine were halted for more than two weeks in January – a disruption that should not be repeated under the new deal.More about: Dmitry Medvedev, European Union, Russia
