Europe and Russia will be hoping they can press the political and economic reset button today as summit in Stockholm gets underway.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev received a warm welcome from his hosts in the Swedish capital, as Moscow confirmed it aims to join World Trade Organisation. Ties between Brussels and the Kremlin still remain prickly following last year’s Russia Georgia war. In addition, differences over energy, trade, human rights and climate change suggest today’s meetings are more about building trust. Nonetheless, this week’s deal on an ‘early warning’ system to shield Europe from energy supply cuts have boosted chances of a renewed partnership. The EU fears a repeat of last January’s gas turn off following a dispute between Russia and Ukraine. A new partnership will aim to stop that happening again, however senior sources suggest there’s little chance of that being signed today.More about: European Union, Russia, Sweden
