Miliband hard-to-get as EU foreign policy chief

The British Foreign Minister David Miliband has consistently said he is not a candidate to spearhead the EU’s pumped up diplomatic service — created under the Lisbon Treaty. And yet his name remained in the hat.

Miliband kept his wagon hitched to politics at home.
Competing for his attention is the future leadership of the Labour party. If he were out serving Europe on the world stage, he would have his hands full.

But diplomats say there is a strong consensus around Miliband… as a young, dynamic, complement to the EU’s first full-time chair of the European Council. Downing Street has resolutely backed former Prime Minster Tony Blair for the president job, and if that ambition did not materialise, a last-minute Miliband candidacy could not be ruled out.
