The EU’s controversial Lisbon Treaty has finally checked in.

At a ceremony in Rome, Czech Prime Minister Jan Fischer handed his government’s approval of the reform document to Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini. Aimed a streamlining the EU’s institutions and decision making, the saga surrounding Lisbon’s ratification ended earlier this month after Czech President Vaclav Klaus dropped his remaining objections to the treaty. The Czech premier said: ‘‘We’re all witnessing the extraordinary event now and the extraordinary situation…..we are at the end of the ratification procedure, and we are at the beginning, we are at the beginning of building up Europe stronger, more efficient, more effective.’‘ Supporters will toast the treaty’s last official step, having struggled for so long to get the document ratified. Attention will now turn to Thursday’s summit in Brussels, where the EU’s top jobs of President and foreign policy chief will be decided.More about: European Union, Treaty of Lisbon
