Michael Caine is back on screens with Harry Brown, directed by Daniel Barber. The plot is basically Gran Torino – ie Old Hard Guy takes on Street Gang, but who cares if we’ve seen the plot before? Clint Eastwood pulled it off and Michael Caine does too.

Daniel Barber says the film is not a comfortable or an easy watch. “It is entertainment,” he says, “but not an easy read.” (He means it’s violent.) Michael Caine says that he wanted the protagonist to “remain a victim” – even once he dusts off his aggression and hits the streets with vengeance on his mind. (He means it’s justified violence.) Emily Mortimer does sterling service as the police office on Harry’s tail and the rest of the cast are also convincing. Reviewers have generally liked the film and audiences are expected to relish Michael Caine doing what he does best: scary!
