Security is being stepped up in Cairo ahead of a potentially volatile football match between Egypt and Algeria on Saturday.

Several Algerian players were slightly injured when their team bus was pelted with rocks by Egyptian fans. The sport’s ruling body, FIFA, has asked Egyptian authorities for written guarantees of additional security measures, but has announced that the match will go ahead. Safety fears are such that the Egyptian and Algerian presidents have telephoned each other to discuss the matter.
