German gets life for courtroom stabbing

A life sentence given to a man by a German court for the murder of an Egyptian woman has been widely welcomed by the Muslim world.
 
Alex Wiens, 28, had stabbed Marwa el-Sherbiny 16 times while appearing in court to appeal a conviction for insulting her with racist and anti-Islamic remarks.
 
He also attacked her husband who was trying to defend her. Police then shot Sherbiny’s husband, wrongly thinking he was the attacker.
 
The case shocked Germany and sparked protests in  Egypt and Iran.
  
Egyptian Ambassador Ramzy Ezzeldin Ramzy said:

“We are quite happy with the way things have turned out, if it is, as I understand, the maximum in German law.”
 
Outside the court, support groups for the victim  had expressed their disgust at how the case had been handled, and how, they say, the climate for immigrants in Germany has worsened with the rise in racially-motivated crimes.
 
Media in Islamic countries have described Marwa el- Sherbiny as the “veiled martyr”.
