Queen Elizabeth has led Britain’s Armistice Day ceremonies at Westminster Abbey in London. Hundreds of veterans joined her for the service, and across the country, and at military bases across the world, people paused to remember the dead. Troops fighting in Afghanistan also marked the occasion.

The rising number of British deaths in Afghanistan has hit public support for that war, with increasing calls for the troops to come home. Prime Minister Gordon Brown, though, has reiterated his belief that Britain must not retreat.

This 91st Armistice Day is the first since the deaths of Britain’s last WW1 veterans – Henry Allingham, Harry Patch and William Stone.
