A new exhibition has opened at Mamco, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Geneva. Two Swiss artists are featured, both of them working in monochrome.

Alain Huck started this series of large-format charcoal drawings 4 years ago, expressing anxiety and loss through light and shadow. He says, “Whatever the representation, it connects to an interior space pierced by a shadowy light, a worrying light.” The scenes represented in these works might look ordinary but show places of personal significance to the artist. Says Alain Huck, “I need the strength of this emotion to begin a picture which in the end requires a huge physical commitment to finish it, to complete the journey. But as soon as I start, I can’t stop, I can’t go on to another picture.” Marc Bauer is also showing a collection of drawings at the exhibition. His work has strong narrative themes, often dealing with memory and the past. He says, “I’ve always felt more free with drawing because with painting there’s this huge heavy tradition which is so inhibiting to me.” The director of the museum Christian Bernard says, “Drawing has lots of virtues that we’ve forgotten. First, there is an immediacy.. drawings are like thoughts at the ends of the fingertips.” The exhibition runs until 17th January.
