Berlin is recovering from yesterday’s jubilant celebrations for the 20th anniversary of the fall of the infamous wall. Germany’s capital welcomed world leaders to remember the historic moment 20 years ago, where people took to the streets to bring down the symbol of the Cold War that divided East and West.

The Chancellor Angela Merkel said: “Freedom doesn’t create itself; freedom has to be fought for; freedom must always be defended. What is freedom? The most vulnerable value of our political and social order.” Though he could not be there in person, President Obama sent a video message saying it was an important day for all Americans as well. He used the celebration of unity as a chance to say that everyone should pull together to solve global problems. As the man whose policies sparked the momentous change, the former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev was also in Berlin. The rainy weather wasn’t enough to dampen the party mood.
