Nine people have been arrested following the discovery of a suspected drugs-smuggling tunnel between Mexico and the US. They were detained after soldiers raided a building in the border city of Tijuana.
The more than 110 metre long tunnel was relatively sophisticated. Its walls were lined with wood panels and it had been equipped with electric lighting and a ventilation system. It was just 130 metres short of US soil.
Mexican authorities say soldiers also discovered 125 kilograms of marijuana in a warehouse elsewhere in Tijuana in a swoop linked to the tunnel raid. Drugs smugglers and people traffickers often use such tunnels to try to cross into the US.
