With thousands of people descending on Berlin for the commemorative events, a massive security operation is underway. Police have blocked off many roads in and around the government district and the Brandenburg Gate.
There is also a tight cordon of protection around a 1.5 kilometre stretch of dominoes which are set to topple as part of the ceremony tonight.
The 2.5 metre high dominoes have been designed to make young people reflect on what the wall meant.
The former Polish and Solidarity leader, Lech Walesa, will have the honour of tipping the first one over.
