Few of the events organised for today’s celebrations have drawn as much attention and anticipation as the Berlin Wall Domino Gallery.

One thousand foam panels, painted by German students, have been placed along the former path of the wall, ready to be toppled. Wolfgang Haese, Berlin resident said: “It’s very very special to us, especially if one grew up here in Berlin.” A woman Berliner said: “We remember November 9 very well because our son tried to escape from the GDR in 1983 and 1984 he was released to the West. We could only meet at foreign territory. So November 9 was for us a very lucky moment. We met our son the very next day on November 10.” The three metre high dominoes have been designed to make young people reflect on what the wall meant. The former Polish leader, Lech Walesa will tip the first one over – it was his pro-democracy Solidarity movement that played a key role in ending communism throughout Eastern Europe. The first of many symbolic moments in a day expected to be charged with emotion.More about: , , ,
