Israelis mark Rabin assassination

The 14th anniversary of the assassination of Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin has been marked by a demonstration in the Tel Aviv square where he was murdered.

Israel’s President Shimon Peres, who was with Rabin when he was killed and who succeeded him as prime minister, told the rally it’s “better to have an imperfect peace, than a perfect war with no end.”

Rabin was shot by an orthodox Jew opposed to the peace process he initiated.

At the rally Peres also called on Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas not to give up on peace.

On Friday Abbas said he would not stand for re-election and expressed disappointment with US President Barack Obama for “favouring” Israel in arguments over relaunching peace talks.
