The commitment of the British government to the troops in Afghanistan has come under fire from three former chiefs of the defence staff.

The criticism from a trio of Britain’s most senior military figures came just hours after Gordon Brown said Britain would not “walk away” from Afghanistan. General Charles Guthrie, former chief of the defence staff: “ The government really needs to show they have great commitment to this. I’m not saying its too late, but I would have preferred the case to have been stronger and earlier.” Brown defended his governments record on Afghaninstan saying it was “simply wrong” to suggest the troops were not backed by Downing Street. As the body count and cost continues to rise Gordon Brown can expect yet more difficult questions concerning the British military presence in Afghanistan.More about: Afghanistan, Military, United Kingdom
