U2 embarrassed by Berlin gig ‘wall’

It was supposed to be U2’s tribute to the fall of the Berlin Wall. But the rock group was left red faced when organisers of a free concert outside the Brandenburg Gate put up their own barrier to stop ticketless fans sneaking a peak of the gig.

A white tarpaulin covered the two-metre fence, which organisers MTV say was there for security purposes.

But the irony of a wall around a concert celebrating the fall of THE Wall was not lost on fans.

One said: “If it’s free, I don’t understand why there are barriers. And for the symbolic (value) of the anniversary of the fall of the Wall, it is very, very strange.”

Some 10,000 free tickets available online were snapped up in just three hours. Organisers stopped short of soundproofing the event, meaning fans who were walled out could at least still sing along.
