Pre-Copenhagen climate talks make little progress

Environmental groups have scaled the heights of Barcelona’s Colombus Monument, hanging a banner ahead of the crucial Copenhagen climate summit.

With just a month to go, and protests multiplying on the sidelines of preparatory talks in Spain, scant progress has been made.

Developing nations accuse rich countries of lowering ambitions, amid suggestions a delay may be needed to tie up details of a legally-binding deal.

Swedish chief negotiator Anders Turesson said:
“Copenhagen is going to be a very important step towards these ultimate goals, to redirect the development of the industrial civilization and to create a new paradigm for development, also for developing countries, of course.”

International stars have lent their voices to a music video aimed at stressing the urgent need for a solution. ‘Beds are Burning’ was a hit for rock group Midnight Oil. Its former frontman Peter Garrett, now Australia’s environment minister, has rewritten the lyrics in a bid to raise the alarm.
