Merck and Schering-Plough begin joint operations

US pharmaceuticals giants Merck and Schering Plough have begun their first day of combined operations following the completion of their merger. The new company will trade under the name of Merck. Cost-savings are a top priority with the new firm expected to shed 15 percent of its combined workforce.
