A former KGB spy turned basketball tycoon has been killed in a drive-by shooting in central Moscow. Shabtai von Kalmanovic was hit 20 times in his car with automatic gunfire. His driver was wounded in the incident which happened only a few metres from the prime minister’s office.
Kalmanovic was Lithuanian born but his family emigrated to Israel. He formed close ties with Israeli leaders, but was eventually jailed for spying for the KGB. On his return to Russia he made his fortune in construction.
As one of the country’s most prominent millionaires he put his money into women’s basketball and had recently been named as manager of the national team.
