“I can hardly remember where I was exactly. I was probably in my office. I got the news even before it was official.

I must say it was not a big surprise to me.

I was in Berlin on the 6th or 7th of October. Gorbachev was also there. 

There a huge demonstration organised by Honecker on the 40th anniversary of the creation of the GDR.

When the protesters walked past the podium, they shouted: ‘Gorby, Gorby help us!’ So I moved closer to Gorbachev and I said: ‘It’s over, it’s the end.’”
