“For me, the fall of the Berlin Wall came a day too late.

I then worked for BBC World Service German output and the night before, I was the duty editor for the Morning Magazine.

And if that would have happened one day sooner, then I would have had this world historical event in my programme.

For journalists, that was a bitter experience.

A year later, I was there in October, at 2.00 pm on 23rd of October when the sign was unscrewed from the GDR Embassy.

I come from Fulda, near the German border and when, shortly after the fall of the Berlin Wall, I was for the first time back in Germany, because all the roads, which I knew in my childhood went nowhere, and suddenly they again led to the Thuringian villages.
