Who could lead Egypt after President Mubarak?

Officially, succession talks are off the agenda for a ruling party conference this weekend in Cairo. However, speculation is rife over who might take over. One possible successor is Mubarak’s son Gamal, although Egypt’s 81-year-old leader is keeping his cards close to his chest. Addressing the congress, Mubarak focused on next year’s parliamentary elections. ‘‘The message to the congress is this: our party, with its youth, intelligence and framework, offers a clear vision for the future of the party, and offers a plan that takes into account the reality of the new Egypt.’‘’ Mubarak, who has ruled Egypt for 28 years, could still run in the 2011 presidential election. That would make him 89 at the end of another six-year term. Despite that possibility, the opposition led by Ayman Nour, has launched a campaign to prevent Gamal taking over from his father.More about: Egypt
