Police arrest one of Italy’s most-wanted mafia men

Police in Italy have dealt yet another blow to organised crime in Naples.

Earlier today, the authorities moved to arrest one of the country’s most wanted Camorra “superbosses”, Pasquale Russo, the alleged head of the Russo clan.

He was picked up after 16 years on the run at a farm in Sperone along with his younger brother Carmine. It follows yesterday’s arrest of a third Russo brother, Salvatore.

Police raided a farmhouse in Somma Vesuviana and found the 51-year-old fugitive, sentenced to life in prison for murder and links to organised crime, holed up and heavily-armed.

Italian security forces claim the Russo clan has total control of illegal activity in some 40 towns and villages in and around Naples.

The heat is on Italy’s criminal gangs after police released footage of a Camorra killing and appealed to the public for help in identifying the killer.

The fact that the public responded suggests that attitudes towards Italy’s notorious crime gangs are changing.
