A NATO probe into an airstrike on two fuel trucks in Afghanistan has said the German army acted appropriately, according to one of its top generals.

The operation was the most deadly involving German troops since the Second World War. At least 69 Taliban and 30 civilians died after German forces called in a US F-15 fighter jet. General Wolfgang Schneiderhan said: ‘‘In light of the results of the investigation, I have no reason to doubt that German soldiers acted appropriately in military terms given the difficult situation…..’‘ Despite the findings of the confidential NATO report, the September 4th assault was condemned by several European foreign ministers immediately following the strike. Germany insisted it was necessary to protect its troops from a possible suicide attack by Taliban fighters who had hijacked the two fuel trucks. Polls suggest a majority of Germans remain highly sceptical about the NATO Afghan mission and want the country’s 4,200-strong force in Afghanistan to come home.More about: Afghanistan, Germany, NATO
