Mozambique President looks sure of re-election

Mozambican President Armando Guebuza is heading for a clear victory in the country’s general election. He is expected to retain power following Wednesday’s presidential, parliamentary and provincial ballots.

The main aim of the millionaire businessman and his ruling Frelimo party is to boost foreign investment, especially from neighbouring South Africa.

Some analysts say while investors could see Guebuza’s victory as a sign of continuity in economic policy, he will face pressure to provide more jobs and housing.

Frelimo has ruled the former Portuguese colony since elections in 1994 that marked the end of a
16-year civil war.

Guebuza’s main challenger is Renamo leader Afonso Dhlakama who led the war against Frelimo and now heads the Mozambique Democratic Movement.

Final official results are due on November 12.
