At least six UN employees have been killed in a Taliban attack on an international guest house in Kabul. A number of others have been wounded, according to a spokesman for the UN mission in Afghanistan.

A rocket has also been fired at the foreign-owned Serena hotel in the Afghan capital. This forced scores of guests to seek refuge in an underground bunker. A police source estimated there were five or six militants inside the besieged hotel building in the city centre. The Taliban has admitted taking the hostages. Intense automatic weapons fire and an explosion resounded in the area. A number of streets were cordoned off by police as gunfire continued and sirens reverberated across the city. An increasingly resurgent Taliban has vowed to stage attacks ahead of a run-off in Afghanistan’s presidential election on November 7th. The most recent attacks add to the security concerns leading up to the vote and the ability of Afghan forces to control the violence.More about: , ,
