Ex-Bosnian Serb leader released from jail

Former Bosnian Serb President Biljana Plavsic has been released from jail in Sweden, after serving six years of an 11-year sentence for war crimes. The 79-year-old was granted an early release by the UN tribunal in the Hague last month.

Plavsic had pleaded guilty to charges of persecution on political, racial and religious grounds. Charges of genocide, extermination and murder were dropped as part of a plea bargain. People convicted at the Hague serve their sentences in prisons outside the Netherlands. The decision to release Plavsic has caused anger among relatives of Bosnian Muslim victims of the war. But it has been welcomed by many Bosnian Serbs.More about: ,
