The number of people killed in this morning’s twin car bombings in Baghdad has risen steeply. It is now known at least 62 people died, with 158 more wounded.
The blasts happened near the Ministry of Justice and the city’s provincial government offices, and are the bloodiest attacks for weeks.
Rising violence may now threaten January’s scheduled elections, a criticial test of Iraq’s stability after years of sectarian killing unleashed by 2003’s US-led invasion. Any postponement would hit President Obama’s chances of reducing American troop levels over the next year.
